Gallery Diary: Afternoons In ESCO & Backyard Knives

(Editor's Note: Words & Photos by Jim GGS)

Tuesday, June 21, 2016: I met up with Ali of Born Guilty. Ali and I have been friends for many years but we never shared an adventure together. We drove up to Menifee for band practice. The band was preparing for a show in Las Vegas.

Their practice room reminded me of my early days in the hardcore scene. The walls were filled with heroes of hardcore music, from Terror to Have Heart and a poster of Cruel Hand that was aged to perfection. I watched them tune out the world.

After practice, we got together and threw knives at a hanging stump. I regretfully suck. I ended up throwing a knife into the neighbor's backyard. Thank God, no one was home. To make amends I hopped over the brittle fence in my underwear because my skinny shorts restricted my movements. I took my shirt off too because I didn’t want to ruin my shirt.

So there I was in the middle of a jungle. Filled with dog shit and thorny weeds that were taller than me, looking for a knife I confidently threw. I never found the fucking knife. As a reminder for throwing knives. “Start slow and short, then gradually move back”. Oh yeah, and don’t throw knives into a neighbor's fucking yard.

Around 5pm, Ali and I made our way down to Ink Spot Tattoo located in one of Escondido’s many hoods. I saw some of the nicest crackheads in my entire life as they pushed their carts filled with goods.

Before you enter "the back" there is a vintage steering wheel from a boat that guides your path. Right behind it is a wall of skate decks, each one unique to its own company and above it a collection of graffiti spray-paint cans. I felt at home. Ali got a hieroglyphic-inspired eye tattooed on his elbow to remind of something important in his life.

I could tell you the details of the meaning, but it is not for me to say. I will tell you, anyone that gets a tattoo probably has meaning behind it. A person should never regret getting a tattoo unless it was forced. If they do regret it, they should keep it anyways to remind them of how fucking stupid they are.

On the long drive home to Temecula, I thought about all my friends and the crazy adventures we used to have. Today is that perfect example. Sometimes we can’t control our choices in life, but it doesn’t mean we can forget where we came from. As human beings, we all have some kind of darkness inside our hearts, but our ability to create relationships and to look past a person’s mistakes make us unique. To anyone who reads this I hope you never forget where you came from. Peace.
